Perhaps the most important part of your home is the roof. It shields you from the elements, keeps your home comfortable, and is a key part of its exterior design. However, because you don’t interact with it every day, you may not realize that there are problems that need to be fixed. Here are some of the most common issues you may see.

Fixing Leaks

Leaks are never fun. They can be a nuisance throughout the day, and can do a lot of damage to the interior of your home. In worst case scenarios, you may have severe flooding to deal with. Because of the awful consequences of ignoring leaks, you need to audit your roof’s health fairly frequently.

If you live in a particularly moist area, this is especially important. First, if you notice small amounts of rain falling in a section of your home, try to figure out where the problem is specifically. Next, hire the right contractor (or teach yourself) so the problem can be sealed quickly.

Clean Your Gutters

The next part of your house you should check out are the gutters. While gross, it is a job that has to be done for the safety of your family and strength of your roof. Additionally, gutter cleaning is critical for healthy landscaping. Getting rid of the build up in your gutters can be used as natural fertilizer for plants.

If you don’t clean your gutters, water build-up can pile on top of your home with nowhere to go but down. This can force leaks without you realizing it. Clearing out your gutters may seem like a pointless and redundant chore, but not doing it can have devastating consequences.

Replacing Shingles

Lastly, you should look to replace your roof’s shingles at least once every five years. Surprisingly enough, your shingles take a lot of heat from the sun, which results in solar damage. If your roof is suffering from the effect, then you are more likely to have a higher energy bill and your home will be much warmer. This may not seem like it’s that devastating, but it can cost you a lot of money. If it’s been a while since you’ve gotten your shingles replaced, you may be wasting a lot of money month to month.

Don’t forget to take care of your roof! While it may not seem like a big deal, getting the job done early can help you feel reassured that your home is safe and doing well.
