Fixing up your home’s exterior can do more than just improve its appearance. Doing exterior renovations is a good way to address issues that could potentially cause damage to your home if left unresolved. There are a few things, in particular, you should look out for when repairing the exterior of your home.

Asphalt and Cement Paving

Over time, asphalt and cement paving are both likely to crack. Spalling concrete, whether in your driveway or walkway, can typically be repaired on your own. Fine cracks in the concrete are likely the result of it drying too quickly after it was poured. A concrete sealer can typically fix these issues. Cracks up to one-quarter inch in size will need to be filled in with sealant. Asphalt driveways are prone to cracking over time and can develop potholes. Before you repair a crack you should remove all of the dirt and vegetation from it. Cracks in asphalt that are less than half an inch can be repaired with a filler. If you have excessive cracking, resurfacing your driveway may be the best way to extend its life.

Siding

Repairing your siding is another project that can protect the exterior of your home. Siding naturally experiences wear and tear over the years and through severe weather. Holes, dents, and scratches can be easily fixed with wood fillers and epoxies from your local hardware store. Larger problems such as siding delamination or warping may require replacement projects. Siding that is not repaired could allow water to infiltrate your home. Stucco siding can be repaired with caulking or patches before being repainted.

Drainage

The drainage around your home is also something that should not be ignored. Good drainage keeps the threat of water problems low. The first thing you should check for is whether your yard landscaping is sloping away from your house. Any ditches near your foundation can allow water to penetrate your foundation. You should also keep your gutters clean and make sure your downspouts are working properly. Your downspouts should be positioned to allow water to flow away from the foundation of your home.

When you are repairing the exterior of your home, there are a few key items you should focus on. Repairing these features will help extend the longevity of your home and prevent future damage. Taking good care of your home’s exterior is the best way to protect your investment.
